12 Universal Laws – 12. Law of Free Will

One of the greatest gifts we possess is the freedom to choose. Every day, from the moment we wake until we go to sleep, we make countless decisions. Some are small and almost automatic, while others shape the course of our lives. The Law of Free Will reminds us that although we cannot control everything that happens to us, we can always choose how we respond.

Many people believe that destiny determines every aspect of life. Others believe that divine beings, fate or the Universe have already mapped out every step. While circumstances may influence us, the Law of Free Will teaches that we are not puppets. We are participants in our own story. We have the ability to make choices, and those choices carry consequences.

Every action begins with a decision.

Imagine standing at a crossroads. One path is easy and familiar, while the other is uncertain and challenging. No one can make that choice for you. Friends may offer advice. Family may encourage one direction over another. Society may expect you to follow a certain route. Ultimately, however, it is your decision.
The same principle applies throughout life.

A person who wishes to become healthier can choose to continue unhealthy habits, or they can choose to eat more nutritious food, exercise regularly and rest properly. Nobody can force lasting change upon them. The decision must come from within.

A student can choose to spend evenings revising or watching television. The examination results will largely reflect that choice.

Someone caught in an argument can choose anger and resentment, or patience and understanding. The words they speak in the next few moments may either heal a relationship or damage it further.

Free will is also closely connected with personal responsibility. It is easy to blame circumstances, other people or bad luck for where we find ourselves. Sometimes life deals us genuinely difficult situations beyond our control. Yet even then, we retain the freedom to choose our attitude and our next step.

This is where the Law of Free Will works hand in hand with other universal principles. Once we choose our direction, the Law of Inspired Action reminds us to act upon it. The Law of Cause and Effect teaches that our choices create consequences. The Law of Compensation shows that consistent effort eventually bears fruit. None of these laws can operate without the freedom to choose in the first place.

Perhaps the greatest challenge to free will is not outside influences but our own habits. Fear, comfort, procrastination and self-doubt can quietly make our decisions for us. Sometimes we convince ourselves we have no choice when, in reality, we simply fear making one. Choosing courage over comfort is often the first step towards growth.

The Law of Free Will also reminds us to respect the choices of others. We may not agree with every decision someone makes, but just as we value our own freedom, we should recognise theirs. Guidance is valuable; control is not. Real wisdom lies in offering advice without removing another person’s right to decide.
No one can live your life for you. Every decision, however small, becomes another brushstroke on the canvas of your life. Some choices lead to success, others to valuable lessons, but each one shapes the person you become.

The Law of Free Will teaches that life is not simply something that happens to us. It is something we actively create through the choices we make each day. Choose wisely, choose consciously, and remember that every new day offers another opportunity to choose a different path.
